The date in the footer controls the form edition
USCIS forms display an edition date at the bottom of the pages. That is the date to compare with the form’s official USCIS webpage. It is not the same thing as an Office of Management and Budget expiration date, a download date or the day the applicant signed.
USCIS says all submitted pages must come from the same current edition. A package assembled from saved files, email attachments and newly downloaded pages can quietly mix versions. The words may look similar while page numbers, barcodes, questions or certifications differ.
Create a clean master before entering answers
Begin at the official page for the exact form number. Read the edition information and transition rule, then download a fresh form and instructions from USCIS. Save them in a dated folder and remove older blank copies from the active workspace so they cannot be substituted accidentally.
Some transitions allow both a new and older edition for a limited time; others have a firm start date with no grace period. For example, USCIS’s Forms Updates page states that the September 9, 2026 edition of Form I-129 becomes the only accepted edition on November 9, 2026. The live form page remains the final check before filing.
Audit every page after printing
After printing, place the pages in order and inspect the footer of each page. Confirm the form number, edition date and page sequence. Do not replace one spoiled page from an old PDF or combine pages produced by different preparation programs unless the footer confirms the same accepted edition.
Make sure the barcodes, text and page margins are readable and not cut off. USCIS’s mailing guidance also instructs filers to include all pages from the same edition. Pages left blank because a question does not apply may still belong in the filing when the form includes them.
- Form number matches the intended benefit request.
- Edition date matches the accepted edition on the official form page.
- Every page shows the same edition date.
- Page numbers are complete and in order.
- No footer, barcode or answer is clipped or obscured.
Recheck signatures after the edition audit
A clean edition does not fix a missing signature. Identify every required applicant, petitioner, sponsor, preparer, interpreter or representative signature and the accepted signature method for that form. Do not paste an image of a signature onto a form merely because the rest of the document is electronic.
Review signature dates against the final answers and attachments. If a signed page must be replaced, regenerate it from the same current master and repeat the footer check before inserting it. Keep the original signed filing copy under controlled access.
Edition, fee and address need one final-date check
Form editions, filing fees and addresses can change on different dates. A package prepared correctly last week may need a new payment amount or destination today. Use the official form page and fee schedule immediately before dispatch, and read any special lockbox or payment instructions for the filing method.
The USCIS Lockbox guidance warns that a wrong payment amount or an incorrectly completed electronic payment form can cause rejection. Keep each payment authorization tied to the correct filing and do not assume that a familiar address or old cover-letter template remains current.
Freeze and preserve the exact filing set
Scan the final signed package exactly as mailed, including the cover letter, forms, evidence, translations, checks or payment authorizations, and delivery label. Name the file with the form, applicant initials and mailing date. Keep the carrier receipt and delivery proof in the same folder.
If USCIS returns the package, compare the rejection notice with the preserved copy before changing anything. Correct the stated defect, then recheck the form edition, fee, address and any deadline affected by the return. A rejected filing can raise legal timing issues, so obtain prompt legal advice when status, age, a statutory deadline or court order may be involved.
- Record the URL and date used for the edition check.
- Record the fee source and filing address used.
- Save the final signed PDF and payment record.
- Save tracking and delivery confirmation.
- Calendar the expected receipt window and any independent deadline.
