A profile is not a permanent residence application

Express Entry manages the Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Worker Program and Federal Skilled Trades Program. Its sequence matters: an eligible candidate creates a profile, enters the pool, may receive an invitation and then submits a permanent residence application for assessment. Entry into the pool is not an approval.

Do not organize your life around a score copied from someone else鈥檚 invitation. Keep a record of the program you are considering and the evidence behind each answer. A high-looking total cannot replace proof of the facts entered.

Prepare a document map first

IRCC鈥檚 document page identifies passports, language results, education records or an educational credential assessment where applicable, work evidence, funds, police certificates and nomination information among the relevant records. Not every candidate needs every item at the same stage.

Create a row for each claimed qualification: what the claim is, which record supports it, when the record expires and whether anything is missing. Compare names and dates across records. If a discrepancy needs an explanation, resolve it honestly rather than quietly changing a scan.

A nomination connects your plan to a province

Provincial Nominee Program streams have their own criteria and are intended for people who want to live in the nominating province or territory. There are Express Entry and non-Express Entry routes. An eligible Express Entry nomination adds 600 points; a nomination still does not replace the federal permanent residence decision.

Check the province鈥檚 own current stream page through IRCC鈥檚 directory. Ask whether the stream requires a job, local ties or an invitation, and whether it is accepting submissions. Keep the provincial and federal steps in separate columns so a completed nomination step is not mistaken for completed immigration processing.

Announced for November 3鈥攏ot effective on October 20

IRCC鈥檚 October 16 update announces changes to CRS points and job-offer requirements from November 3, 2026. It introduces a Labour Market Integration factor involving qualifying Canadian work experience or eligible high-wage job offers. The agency says it will pause invitation rounds during profile recalculation, which may take up to two weeks.

These are upcoming changes as of this article鈥檚 October 20 publication. Do not describe them as already operating or assume invitation rounds are already paused. Check the linked change notice before updating a profile; occupational classification, program eligibility and ranking points are different questions.
