Request the records you actually need
A focused Freedom of Information Act or Privacy Act request can help a person obtain copies of records maintained by USCIS. Broad requests may take longer and can produce large, difficult-to-review files.
- Describe record types and date ranges clearly.
- Include identity verification and authorization where required.
- Index notices, applications, decisions, and correspondence after delivery.
Protect personal information
Immigration files can contain highly sensitive identifiers. Do not send passport numbers, A-numbers, Social Security numbers, or complete records through an ordinary consultation form.
