Identify the permission before accepting the plan

IRCC distinguishes employer-specific permits from open work permits. An employer-specific route requires a job offer and may require the employer to obtain a Labour Market Impact Assessment. An open permit does not require a job offer, but is available only in qualifying situations鈥攏ot simply because someone would like flexibility.

Use IRCC鈥檚 work-permit navigation tool to identify the correct instructions. A recruitment advertisement, employment contract and immigration authorization are separate things. Keep each in a separate folder so an employer鈥檚 enthusiasm is not mistaken for permission to start work.

Read the offer as a working document

Make an offer-comparison sheet showing the employer鈥檚 legal name, role, duties, workplace, hours, pay, start date and contact details. Flag anything that differs between the offer, recruiter鈥檚 messages and proposed application. The sheet is an organization tool; it does not determine whether an offer meets immigration law.

Contact the employer through independently verified public details if something looks inconsistent. A professionally designed letter is not enough on its own. Preserve the original messages and documents rather than relying on a screenshot forwarded through several people.

Separate the employer鈥檚 steps from yours

Ask which work-permit route the employer expects to use and what official documentation it will provide. Do not fill a gap with a number invented by a recruiter. If the employer鈥檚 explanation and IRCC instructions disagree, pause the submission and obtain qualified advice.

Create a responsibility list: documents the employer supplies, records you supply and questions that require an authorized representative. Give each unresolved item a date for follow-up. This is more useful than collecting unrelated certificates in the hope that volume will compensate for a missing requirement.

A job does not guarantee permanent residence

If your long-term goal is permanent residence, research that pathway separately. Do not assume every job or permit produces the same immigration options. Keep current employment permission, any renewal question and future immigration planning as distinct decisions.

Before traveling or resigning from an existing job, read the actual approval and arrival instructions. Confirm outstanding conditions rather than relying on a promised start date. For questions about changing employers, status expiry or whether work may begin, use current official instructions and individualized authorized advice.

Reject guarantees

IRCC warns that nobody can guarantee a Canadian job or visa. A demand for secrecy, false information or payment tied to guaranteed approval should prompt closer scrutiny. Protect your accounts and retain receipts for any legitimate service.
