Check what you need for this journey
The visitor-visa page links to the official tool for determining whether your travel circumstances require a visa or an electronic travel authorization. Passport, nationality and travel details matter. Do not assume that a friend鈥檚 documents or a previous journey answer the question for your next trip.
Build a simple trip sheet: purpose, dates, accommodation, funding and the people or places you intend to visit. Keep it realistic. A clear, truthful plan is more useful than an elaborate itinerary copied from a template that does not match your intentions.
Connect the evidence to the actual visit
IRCC鈥檚 visitor requirements include a valid travel document, sufficient money and evidence that you will leave at the end of your authorized visit. It identifies ties such as employment, a home, assets or family. Additional requirements can depend on the circumstances.
Explain how each selected record supports the plan. An invitation letter can describe a host鈥檚 arrangements, but it does not turn the host into the immigration decision-maker. Avoid contradictory dates across leave letters, booking plans and application answers.
A visa does not guarantee admission
A valid visa and passport do not guarantee entry. Border officers assess identity and entry requirements on arrival. Keep relevant supporting documents accessible, including an invitation and any documents needed for a child鈥檚 travel.
Most visitors may stay up to six months, but an officer can authorize a different period. Read the passport stamp or visitor record and record the applicable end date. Do not assume the visa鈥檚 expiry date is the date until which you may remain after entering.
Plan before the permitted stay ends
IRCC advises applying to extend a visit at least 30 days before the authorized stay ends. Use the current extension instructions and keep a copy of any submission. If you are unsure about your status or missed a deadline, obtain authorized advice rather than guessing.
A visit plan is not a work-permit plan. If the purpose changes, research the rules governing the new activity before acting. Do not accept a promise that arriving as a visitor automatically creates permission to work.
Recheck immediately before travel
Check current entry alerts as well as the ordinary document requirements. Public-health and other measures can affect a traveler even when a general guide remains accurate. The official visitor pages link to current notices; use those notices for the exact scope and exceptions.
Educational information, not legal advice or an eligibility assessment. Original Documentation is independent of the Government of Canada. Use the current official instructions for your circumstances; obtain advice from an authorized Canadian immigration professional for individual legal questions.
