Start with the written reason
Seeing ‘Refused’ after a visa interview can be frightening, particularly when a family has already imagined a reunion or an employer expects a start date. Under section 221(g), the State Department says the applicant has not yet established eligibility. The officer may request additional material or identify a need for administrative processing; reconsideration can follow, but approval is not assured.
Read the notice before making a new appointment or paying another fee. Write down the legal section, interview date, case number, and every instruction. A social-media account of someone else's interview cannot establish what your officer requested. Keep a photograph or scan of the entire notice, including its reverse side.
Separate your response from government review
The State Department distinguishes cases needing information from the applicant from cases requiring additional administrative processing. For requested documents, its guidance generally gives one year from refusal to supply the information; failing to do so can require a new application and fee. Follow any specific notice instructions promptly and obtain advice if a deadline is unclear.
For your own preparation, make a three-column checklist: requested item, document prepared, and submission confirmation. If the notice requests a particular record, do not bury it in unrelated attachments. Preserve the exact files submitted, and record the delivery method so a later inquiry can identify what was sent and when.
Plan around uncertainty without inventing a deadline
Administrative-processing duration varies by case. Published interview waiting times do not include this additional review or passport return. The State Department advises applicants with unique hardship to inform the consular section. Neither a hardship inquiry nor document delivery establishes that a visa will be issued by a particular date.
Consider a practical contingency plan with your family, school, or employer: which arrangements can be postponed, which deposits are refundable, and who needs a status update? Keep inquiries factual and use the post's official contact instructions. If the notice raises another refusal ground, suspected misrepresentation, or a petition problem, ask a licensed immigration attorney to review the complete record before responding.
